Welcome!

I’m an economist specializing in science and innovation. Bio, projects, etc., below!

I’m probably best known as the creator and sole author of New Things Under the Sun, a living literature review on academic research about science and innovation. Since November 2022, I’ve been a research fellow working on metascience at Open Philanthropy. I split my time between writing for New Things Under the Sun, helping figure out a metascience strategy that balances concerns about safety and efficiency of science, and making grants.

Prior to that, I was senior innovation economist at the Institute for Progress, where I remain a senior fellow. Before that I was an assistant teaching professor in the economics department of Iowa State University and a PhD research economist working on science policy at the US Department of Agriculture. I’ve been active in academic research, teaching, and writing for the public (especially on topics related to innovation and remote work). I’m married with three kids and live in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.
