Welcome!

I work on economic growth in high income countries. Bio, projects, etc., below!

I lead the Abundance and Growth Fund at Coefficient Giving, where we make grants to foster more innovation, speed technological diffusion, and promote broadly shared economic growth. Prior to that, I ran the Innovation Policy program, which focused on the innovation part of that equation. Otherwise, I’m probably best known as the creator and sole author of New Things Under the Sun, a living literature review on academic research about science and innovation.

Prior to that, I was senior innovation economist at the Institute for Progress, where I remain a senior fellow. Before that I was an assistant teaching professor in the economics department of Iowa State University and a PhD research economist working on science policy at the US Department of Agriculture. I’ve been active in academic research, teaching, and writing for the public. I’m married with three kids and live in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.
